What to Expect with a PPD Test — TB Skin Testing at Our Clinic

At our clinic, we offer comprehensive PPD (Purified Protein Derivative) skin testing for tuberculosis (TB) screening. This test is often required for employment, school, healthcare work, or immigration medical assessments.

Step 1: First Visit — Medical Assessment & PPD Test Placement

  • Our healthcare provider will review your medical history, TB risk factors, and previous test results.
  • A small amount of PPD solution is injected under the top layer of skin on your forearm.
  • You may see a small, raised bump at the injection site. This is normal.

Step 1: Second Visit — PPD Test Reading (48–72 Hours Later)

  • You must return to the clinic within 48 to 72 hours.
  • We will measure any swelling (induration) at the test site.
  • The size of the reaction determines if your test result is positive or negative for TB exposure.

Step 2: Two-Step PPD Testing (If Required)

  • Second PPD Placement – At least 7 days after your first test, we will administer a second PPD injection.
  • Second Reading (48–72 Hours Later) – Just like the first test, you must return again within 48 to 72 hours after Step 2 placement to have the test site examined and measured.

If the PPD Test Is Positive — Chest X-Ray Evaluation

  • A positive PPD test means you may have been exposed to TB, but it does not mean you have active disease.
  • We will order a chest X-ray (CXR) to check for any signs of active TB.
  • If your chest X-ray is normal and you have no symptoms, most employers and institutions will allow you to work, as you do not have active pulmonary tuberculosis.
